Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. It will transform Sydney, delivering more trains and faster services for customers across the network. The Sydney Metro West project extends the new metro network and includes a new Parramatta Metro Station, Westmead Metro Station and Clyde Stabling Yards.

The scope of works included consecutive demolition works across three separate sites:

  • 22,000m2 block in the Parramatta Station site located in the CBD, with 16 properties ranging in size from 5 storey carpark structures at 15m and 7 storey office structures 21m high to various other structures ranging from 2-3 stories. The site required specialist archaeological surveys to investigate, survey and record the historical area prior to the follow on contractor commencing their excavation for the new station box.
  • 123,000m2 Clyde Stable Yards light industrial site consisting of 18 different structures
  • 12,000m2 Westmead Station site, including residential structures and consisting of 19 properties, ranging from single level dwellings to 4 level apartment blocks.

Delta Group delivered works as Principal Contractor reporting direct to Sydney Metro to meet all planning and ministerial conditions of the project. Specialist archaeological clearing works were awarded to Delta as an opportunity to de-risk unexpected finds for the follow on contractor. Significant planning was required to meet strict Environmental, Community, Ministerial, Temporary Works and Safety requirements of the project. Environmental controls addressed asbestos in both structures and in soils, as well as lead paint.

Key project statistics include:

  • Total 112,825 work hours
  • 1,000+f vehicle movements
  • 40,000t concrete recycled
  • 1,200t C&D waste stripped from structures prior to demolition activities
  • 17,500t spoil excavated as part of archaeological clearing works
  • Disposal and tracking to meet project auditors requirements of 17,500t of GSW and asbestos contaminated soils – disposed offsite in 700+ vehicle movements
