Multiplex contracted Delta Group in 2016 to complete civil construction works for Melbourne’s first 6 Star integrated residential and retail precinct – the $500m ‘Capitol Grand’ development in South Yarra.

The scope of works included:

  • Site preparation, including the removal of existing retaining wall and waste materials and contaminated ground material.
  • Bulk/detailed excavation works allowing for the construction of reinforced concrete foundations and placement of imported engineer fill for the construction of a piling platform.
  • Construction and removal of temporary ramp retention.
  • Concrete infrastructure – slab preparation layer, retention systems and lift core rafts.
  • Construction of crane bases.
  • Emissions, noise and vibration controls.
  • Transport logistics, including traffic management and supervision.
  • Site infrastructure – basement stormwater drainage systems.
  • Site dewatering.

This project involved an extremely tight works programme that included two large cores handed-over separately. While operating down to 15 metres on a large 5,600 sqm site we were limited to just one access point via a neighbouring alley-way, which demanded a large temporary ramp to maintain clearance of one of the main cores. We also overcame challenges relating to a range of soil types that varied from dyke material to weak and hard mudstone – all within close proximity to each other. Other key achievements included:

  • Excavation of more than 100,000 cubic metres of siltstone.
  • Installation of 155 retention piles and 140 foundation piles, as well as 850 temporary ground anchors.
  • Spraying 4,500 sqm of shotcrete.
