Unique Attributes

Following significant rain events that threatended the stability of the Yallourn Open Pit Coal Mine walls (that had previously collapsed in 2007 and 2012), the Victorian Government declared a State Energy Emergency that facilitated approval of the diversion of the Morwell River into the redundant Hazelwood Mine pit

Key Challenges

Construction of Open Earth Drains, including Rock Spalls (erosion control), Plugs and Energy Dissipator at the bottom of Hazelwood Mine batters
Construction of Concrete Pipe Crossings, including Head Walls, Concrete Pipe installation, Rock Spalls and Road Crossings
Construction of Concrete Drain, including Concrete Baffles and Stilling Basin
Construction of Weir to halt flow of river toward Yallourn
