Unique Attributes
- Structural demolition of two lane bridge above Queensland’s busiest road – the M1 Motorway, including night works to accommodate road closures
- Cut and lift methodology designed alongside safe removal of asbestos sheeting throughout structure
- 450t crawler crane (with 72m long boom) deployed to lift 26m girder beams – placed onto 45m long trailers with bridge deck attached
- Installation of scaffold tower to carry weight of structure once bridge cut in half
Key Challenges
- Design and implementation of strict asbestos controls – gutter systems to capture slurry; placement of bins to capture core holes; core hole protection flanges for safe lifts; protective L-angles installed to protect edges; and onsite hygienist and sign offs prior to reopening motorway
- Restricted works timeframe – 5 hours per shift – to minimise impact on motorway and neighbouring residents
