Job Description

As an Apprentice Diesel Mechanic, you will be learning to service and maintain a huge range of late model heavy plant and equipment across our workshop operations. Successful candidates will be offered four year apprenticeships and will be responsible for the servicing, repair and maintenance of a fleet of heavy plant, including Hitachi, Yanmar, Mustang, CAT, Komatsu and Volvo equipment. A number of apprenticeships are open and will be located at our Port Melbourne and Dandenong workshop facilities and may include travel to attend to site-based breakdowns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Comply with workplace health and safety rules at all times
  • Perform routine maintenance, including (but not limited to) oil changes, engine tune-ups, and coolant flushes
  • Assisting with diagnostics and repairs of machinery, electrical and hydraulic systems, and other components
  • Repair or replace worn and defective parts, including troubleshooting as required or directed
  • Use and maintain hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment (under supervision)
  • Shadow and observe qualified and experienced personnel
  • Read and follow established work methods, checklists and/or manuals
  • Carry out administrative tasks/duties as instructed
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and workshop personnel

Qualifications & Experience

  • Valid/current Victorian Driver’s Licence (C Class)
  • Willingness to commit to a four (4) year apprenticeship
  • High level mechanical and/or electrical skills
  • Excellent communication – written and verbal, including literacy or the ability to read and follow technical manuals/documentation
  • Demonstrated capability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to pass medical/health assessment and to undergo workplace drug and alcohol testing
  • Second and/or third year apprentices may apply
  • Previous experience in a heavy equipment workshop environment
