With concrete foundations traditionally used at a 500kV voltage level, BRC Piling & Foundations collaborated closely with client CPP and Gateway Energy to design and deliver an innovative solution involving steel pile foundations for a temporary/bypass structure on the HYTS-APD Tower Replacement project in Portland.

According to CPP, steel poles and driven piles are uncommon on 500kV works and the successful outcome was the result of strong planning, the right methodology and a collaborative team effort. Steel piles were driven directly into the ground with a vibratory hammer mounted on a specialist crane – a designed methodology that brought about faster installation and which was well suited to the restricted site footprint and unique environmental constraints.
